Music at altitude: the Portillo Festival concert captivated audiences at the Farellones Chapel
On Saturday 7 June, the recently restored Farellones Chapel — a heritage space recovered by the Lo Barnechea Cultural Corporation — vibrated with the powerful, precise sound of the Portillo Festival brass quintet, made up of five young scholarship musicians from the Portillo International Music Academy.
At more than 2,200 meters of altitude, in a setting surrounded by nature and mountains, a unique musical moment united artistic excellence, closeness with the audience and an eclectic repertoire that delighted those present.
A musical journey from south to north
The concert program — which the performers titled “From south to north” — presented a selection of works that traveled styles and territories: from arrangements of Brazilian choro and Latin American popular music to passages of Bernstein and classical works written especially for brass quintet.
The ensemble, made up of two trumpets, trombone, horn and tuba, was composed of musicians selected in international auditions held by the Portillo Festival. Each of them has trained under the pedagogical excellence of this academy that brings together emerging talent from the continent.
The chapel’s natural acoustics — built of stone and wood — enhanced the color and precision of the quintet, wrapping the audience in an intimate and powerful sonic experience.
A community gathered around music
The concert was free and open, and brought together around 100 people, including residents, visitors, musicians and families. The activity was very well received by the community, which valued both the quality of the program and the chance to experience a live concert in a natural heritage setting.
Decentralized culture, music without borders
This activity was part of the Festival Portillo in Territories program, an initiative that seeks to build a common territory around classical music through free concerts in different districts. In this case, Lo Barnechea was the host, reaffirming its commitment to culture and artistic decentralization, in partnership with the Portillo Festival.
